Your First Acupuncture Appointment in Chiswick

If you are thinking about booking your first acupuncture appointment in Chiswick, it is natural to have questions. Most people tell me the reality is much calmer than they expected. Here is what a first appointment with me involves, from the consultation to aftercare.

Before you arrive

You can book online and complete a short health form beforehand. Wear loose, comfortable clothing so I can reach points on your arms and lower legs easily. It helps to have eaten a light meal an hour or two before, rather than coming on an empty stomach.

The consultation

We start with a detailed conversation about your health, your history and what has brought you in. In Traditional Chinese Medicine I will also ask about sleep, digestion, energy and, where relevant, your menstrual cycle, as these help build a full picture. I will also look at your tongue and take your pulse at both wrists.

If you are interested in naturopathy, we can also talk through your diet and lifestyle and how they fit with your goals.

Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are very fine, much thinner than those used for injections. Most people feel a small pinch as the needle goes in, sometimes followed by a dull sensation, warmth or tingling around the point. The needles usually stay in for 20 to 30 minutes while you rest, and many people find this part deeply relaxing. All needles are single-use, sterile and disposed of after each treatment.

After your treatment

You may feel relaxed or a little tired, so it helps to avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for the rest of the day. Occasionally a point can leave a small bruise. Before you leave, we will discuss a plan for future sessions based on what we have talked about.

Is acupuncture safe?

When carried out by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is very safe. I am a member of the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture (ATCM), which sets standards for training, hygiene and professional conduct. Please let me know if you are pregnant, take blood-thinning medication or have a pacemaker, as this may change how I treat you.

Frequently asked questions

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

This depends on what you are coming in for. Many people have weekly sessions to begin with, then space them out. We will agree a plan together at your first appointment.

Can I claim acupuncture on my health cash plan?

Many health cash plans recognise ATCM members. Check with your provider before your appointment, and I will give you a receipt to claim with.
